The Kansas Jayhawks earned a #2 seed in the NCAA tournament after winning the regular season title in the Big 12, but they are looking to make amends for a poor showing in the conference tournament. Kansas lost by 9 to Baylor in the semi-finals and because of that loss many thought they would fall to a #3 or #4 seed.
Belmont line and total: Kansas -13.5 and 142.5
The Jayhawks are out to prove those detractors wrong and would like to give some validation to the selection committee who actually ranked them as the best #2 seed in the tournament (5th overall). They are up against Dick Vitale’s alma mater in Detroit and are hoping to make quick work of the Titans.
Kansas is a very experienced team having been a high seed (#1 or #2) the past few years and that will go a long way as this tournament goes on. Well nobody remains from their championship year in 2008, players like Tyshawn Taylor and Travis Releford and Thomas Robinson have been around for many of their deep runs in recent years, only to come up short in the end. Robinson is in the talks for national player of the year as he averages 17.9 pts/game and has become a true leader on this team.
Taylor runs the offense and can put it in the hole as well (17.3 pts/game). He does have some issues regarding turnovers, so as long as he keeps that in check tonight the Jayhawks should be fine. While many high seeds often use these opening games as glorified scrimmages, with the fragility surrounding the program in regards to expectations they do not want to give this Cinderella Detroit team any life.
The Jayhawks are 4-0 ATS this year when coming off a SU loss and 4-1 ATS after losing against the number. In some ways that disappointing loss to Baylor will help them tonight and going forward because it knocked the kids off their pedestal, thinking they were untouchable until the later rounds. As a #1 seed last year they won by 19 and I don’t see much being different in tonight’s game, even though they are theoretically worse as a #2.
Lay the chalk with Kansas.
