Betting on this year's March Madness is now in full swing. Let's take a quick look at these three favorites and where they stand heading into Thursday's games.
Baylor - They were a -10 ½ favorite against Sam Houston, however, the line on this game initially opened at -12 so it is especially fluid. Still, nearly 85 percent of the backing was going Baylor's way. The Bears were the most improved defensive team in the Big 12. The Bears' versatility and experience are chief assets and they feature a very commanding inside presence.
Kansas State - Their March Madness betting odds came in at -16 with the line being stable these past few days. 70 percent of the public backing was on Kansas State here. This is a team that gets to the foul line a lot. Then again, so does North Texas.
From Fox Sports:
The Kansas State frontcourt has more trouble handling and passing the basketball than the guards. Lack of production from the bigs under such circumstances can put too much pressure on Pullen and Clemente. But the Wildcats often get into a flow with their defense. A deep bench allows them to play incredibly aggressive on both ends. No Big 12 team was better crashing the offensive glass. One huge key is Clemente must continue to play within himself and not try to do too much.
There is enough reason to believe North Texas can at least cover in this game.
And finally, we have New Mexico. This team had March Madness betting odds open at -8 ½ and, like Kansas State, there hasn't been much movement though the trend is a half point up to -9. The action here was more balanced with the Lobos getting around 65 percent.
The Lobos open Thursday in San Jose, Calif., against 14th-seeded Montana. They set a school record with 29 victories. This is also a squad that proved for the first time in a long time they could win games outside of Albuquerque.
New Mexico lost a pair of 6-10 centers -- one to a knee injury, the other to disciplinary problems -- leaving the team with no one taller than 6-8. A.J. Hardeman and Will Brown rotate in the post. New Mexico's solid defense could help to make this game a rout.
The Grizzlies were seventh in the nine-team Big Sky in assists and last in the league in offensive rebounds. They also have only one double-digit scorer.
