Driverless vehicles are officially here...and mostly safe

We had the opportunity to ride in the Waymo driverless ride-sharing vehicles while here in San Francisco.  They were great.

Waymos are currently only available in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Phoenix.  Miami, DC and Atlanta should see them soon.  Waymo just completed their 10 millionth ride.

Tesla also wants in.

Manifold has a betting market on whether Tesla will have driverless ride-hailing in the US by end of 2025.  Some 54% believe they will.

Manifold's market resolves YES if Tesla does at least 10,000 cab rides by year end and the service is still operational with any Tesla model (not restricted to Cyber cab).

Tesla CEO Elon Musk appears to be on the verge of making his robotaxi vision a reality with a test run of a small squad of self-driving cabs in Austin, Texas, that began Sunday. Reaching a million may take a year or more, however, although the billionaire should be able to expand the service this year if the Austin demo is a success.

From The Associated Press:

Tesla shareholders have stood by Musk over the years because he’s defied the odds by building a successful standalone electric vehicle company — self-driving car promises aside — and making them a lot of money in the process. A decade ago, Tesla shares traded for around $18. The shares closed Friday at $322. At midday Monday, the shares were up 10% as investors reacted positively to the rollout.

Musk seemed jubilant Sunday morning, posting on X, “The @Tesla_AI robotaxi launch begins in Austin this afternoon with customers paying a $4.20 flat fee!”
