Can't Use My Credit Card to Bet the Hawkeyes Game From Iowa

Iowa regulated sportsbooks are forbidden from allowing individuals to open betting accounts or placing wagers using a credit card. These websites include DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM, to name a few. Offshore sportsbooks like BetOnline accept most major credit cards providing the bank issuer allows the cards for gambling (Wells Fargo, for example, does not). Local bookies take things a step forward by allowing gamblers in the state to bet on credit, meaning customers don't have to fork over any money in the form of a deposit.

Hawkeye State's Tough Stance on Credit Cards

Iowa regulators fined one licensed sportsbook, American Wagering Inc (better known as Caesars Sportsbook)., $60k for allowing its customers to bet using a credit card.

Brian Ohorilko, the administrator for the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC), said they discovered the incident in 2021 but only fined the company last year. In some cases prepaid debit cards were used.

“Once it was determined what had occurred, the commission knew that this particular payment processor was also being utilized by six other vendors in Iowa, six other online sportsbooks,” Ohorilko said.
