Dustin Hoffman to Star in HBO Gambling Series “Luck”

There is a new HBO series to debut and it's about gambling.  It's working title is "Luck" and will star Dustin Hoffman.

David Milch produced the gloriously profane series Deadwood for HBO. Now Dustin Hoffman has been cast in his new series, Luck, about a supersmart ex-con with a horse track betting problem. John Ortiz is will play a horse trainer, and the series will be launching in January.

The show, currently in its development stages, is already arousing the interests of television critics.

(The) news that Dustin Hoffman is going to play the lead (is) one of the biggest casting coups HBO has ever had. It's been a while since he was able to successfully carry a movie, but the guy is still a two-time Oscar winner, portrayer of some of the most iconic movie roles of the 20th century, and still a great actor when he's motivated to do so. (He's also still a big enough name that, as "Parks and Recreation" producer Mike Schur tweeted last night, Hoffman would more or less lock up the Emmy for lead actor in a drama for however long he'd be on the show. (Emmy voters love to honor movie stars who come to work in TV.)

HBO is the same cable network that brought us another popular series that at times featured a gambling theme, the Sopranos.

That show actually enjoyed plenty of betting opportunities courtesy of online sportsbooks like Bookmaker.com (i.e. first to get whacked each season).
