Snooki Outwitted By Underwater Pussy
In this week’s “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” news, Jersey Shore’s Snooki (real name Nicole Polizzi), has been outwitted by none other than an obscure underwater pussycat.
Snooki’s application to trademark her now famous name with the United States Patent and Trademark Office was denied on the basis that
"Snooki" was likely to be confused with "Snooky," an underwater cat from a relatively obscure children's book.
The Smoking Gun reports that the 2004 trademark was, amusingly, for “Adventures of Snooky,” a children’s book featuring a cat who gets knocked overboard while on a family fishing trip.
It is indeed common for the United States Patent and Trademark Office to deny applications even from the biggest names in business such as Google.
The search engine giant was recently denied in its attempt to own the "Nexus One" name for its Android 2.1 smartphone.
"Registration of the applied-for mark is refused because of a likelihood of confusion with the mark in U.S. Registration No. 3554195," the USPTO wrote in its March 9 ruling, according to the Nexus One blog.
Integra Telecom currently owns the moniker.
But just as Google has options to contest the decision or pay Integra Telecom, Snooki still has a shot at securing the trademark.
Polizzi “may respond to the refusal by submitting evidence and arguments in support of registration,” according to USPTO flings.
Gambling911.com believes her chances are relatively good, giving her just better than even odds of obtaining the “Snooki” trademark.
