Brazil
Brazil needed all of their resolve to pull out a win in the shootout over Chile, edging them 3-2. David Luiz scored his first goal for Brazil, who put 13 of their 23 shots on target, but Chile pushed the hosts as far as they could go and they may have been unlucky to win this massive match. Neymar was threatening once again and buried his chance in the shootout, and Hulk even got in on the action, although he had a goal rightfully called back for handball (the yellow card was undeserved). It wasn’t a top-notch effort from the Brazilians, but they showed plenty of grit and did enough to get to the next round.
Colombia
James now has five goals to his account after a pair carried Colombia to a 2-0 win over Uruguay, and his first goal was a cracking volley that could stand as the best goal of the World Cup when it is all said and done. Colombia did have a few nervy moments at the back as Uruguay outshot them 16-10 and got nine shots on target to Colombia’s eight, but James was the difference and this team looks absolutely fearless when they’re going forward. Brazil can’t forget about Jackson Martinez or Juan Cuadrado, either, because if they pay too much attention to James, these two can make them pay.
