Germany Preview:
Strengths
The Germans have seven midfielders that can start for any country in the world, and that isn’t counting Lukas Podolski, who is listed as a midfielder but is more of a forward. Bastian Schweinsteiger is probably the first on the team sheet, but Toni Kroos isn’t far behind, Marco Reus is a monster, Thomas Muller has a knack of scoring important goals and how do you leave out Sami Kheidira and Mesut Ozil? Mario Gotze will have to move up front to get time, and Julian Draxler is coming through the ranks.
If Gotze moves up front, that gives the Germans three striking options in Podolski, Gotze and Miroslav Klose, who is second all-time in caps with 131 and tied for first in goals with 68. Klose has slipped for Lazio, but he always comes through for the national team.
Weaknesses
Germany’s willingness to get everyone forward can hurt them on the counter, and the Schweinsteiger/Kheidira duo has to rein it in a little and shield the defense (and both men, especially Kheidira, have been hurt quite a bit this season). Captain Philipp Lahm has lost a step at right back, while Mats Hummels, Per Mertesacker and Jerome Boateng are all prone to lapses in judgment in central defense. The presumed starter at left back, Erik Durn, has just one cap at 22 years old. Keeper Manuel Neuer might have to do a lot of work.

Portugal Preview:
Strengths
Portugal’s fortunes will rest with captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who recently led Real Madrid to the Champions League victory (his second), and he has scored 51 goals or more in each of the last four seasons. Furthermore, he is starting to play for his country the way he plays for his club as Ronaldo scored eight goals during qualification, and his hat trick in a playoff game against Sweden got them here. There has been some concern about his fitness as he struggled in the Champions League final, but Ronaldo should be close to 100% for Portugal, and he better be or else this team is in danger of going out in the group stage.
Defensively, Portugal should be okay with Bruno Alves, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao and Joao Pereira along the back in front of Rui Patricio or even Eduardo. While people think of Portugal as an offensive side because of the man up front, Portugal is actually quite sturdy at the other end of the pitch. Miguel Veloso and possibly William Carvalho will shied the defense.
Weaknesses
Ronaldo is obviously the star of the show, but he’ll need some support from Joao Moutinho, who is a brilliant playmaker and when he is on, Portugal is a handful because teams can’t focus on the captain. Nani had a terrible season for Manchester United, but he can get his confidence back with a good World Cup, and Raul Meireles is in the mix as well. Helder Postiga and Hugo Almeida have tried to help Ronaldo out, with middling results.
Manager Paulo Bento is also very conservative in his tactics and if his Plan B isn’t working, Portugal usually doesn’t have a Plan B other than “get the ball to Ronaldo”. He might have to loosen the reins in Brazil.
