Mexico is quite fortunate to be playing in the Gold Cup Final after a controversial victory against Panama. Panama’s Luis Tejada received a red card in the 25th minute, but his country struck first in the 57th minute from a Román Torres goal. It appeared as if Panama was going to hold on for the victory, but a questionable penalty call at the death of regulation gave Mexico a lifeline. Andrés Guardado converted the penalty, and he added another in the first half of extra time to secure the victory for El Tri. All three of Mexico’s goals in the knockout stage have come from the penalty spot, meaning the country has not scored from open play in over 240 minutes of action. Head coach Miguel Herrera and his squad are in a great position to win the Gold Cup, but they will want to win against Jamaica in emphatic fashion in order to quell doubts over the legitimacy of their title.
Jamaica enters the Final coming off of an impressive 2-1 victory over the United States. The Reggae Boyz were much stronger than their opponents in the first half, and used goals from Darren Mattocks and Giles Barnes to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. Michael Bradley quickly drew one back in the 48th minute, but Jamaica was able to weather the storm and leave Atlanta with a 2-1 win. Many pundits are calling this win a huge upset, but Jamaica deserves more credit than it is currently receiving. The country had an impressive showing at the Copa América, losing all three of its games by a narrow margin of 1-0, including outings against South American giants Argentina and Uruguay, and is now undefeated at the Gold Cup.
Jamaica has won its last four games in regulation time, and is primed to win its first ever Gold Cup title. Given Mexico’s struggles on offense and the low-scoring nature of the tournament thus far, expect under 2.5 goals to be scored. Mexico is a much bigger name in the world of international soccer than is Jamaica, but current form indicates that Jamaica has a great chance to win this match, perhaps by a score of 1-0.
