45 ‘Dodgy’ Sports Bets Probed as Part of Massive Match Fixing Scandal

Last week’s shocking discovery of what could potentially become the biggest match fixing scandal in football history is just the tip of the iceberg.  The Daily Star reported on Monday that some 45 suspicious bets are currently under investigation.

Last Wednesday evening the National Crime Agency revealed to the Telegraph: “Six men have been arrested across the country as part of an NCA investigation into alleged football match fixing. The focus of the operation is a suspected international illegal betting syndicate. The NCA is working closely with the Gambling Commission and the Football Association.”

Three footballers were later revealed to be among those arrested.

Singapore national Chann Sankaran, 33, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, 43, were charged with conspiracy to defraud.  Sources have told the BBC one of the other suspects is former Premier League player Delroy Facey, now a football agent.

From the Daily Star:

From April 1 to the end of September the gambling regulator dealt with 20 reported cases of “suspicious betting activity” connected to football.

The cases have since been “closed” – either by being passed to an external agency such as the police or being deemed unsubstantiated.

In the previous six months the Gambling Commission, which has been involved with the latest case, dealt with ten cases involving football.

The Daily Star also notes that there were tennis and horse racing bets deemed as “suspicious”.
