Fantasy sports site does end run around law to provide Super Bowl action

Turns out there's more than one way to skin a cat, or in this case, a super cat.

Fantasy sports site ScoreStreak.com has found a way to offer fantasy action on the Super Bowl, despite a law stating that fantasy play must be based on the results of multiple games.

In an ingenius move, the folks at ScoreStreak have created something called the "Big Game Mash-up," a fantasy contest that will combine the action from the Super Bowl this coming Sunday with the action from a pro basketball game played the same day.

Gambling911.com earlier this week spoke with ScoreStreak chief executive officer Ross Borden about the company's revolutionary creation.

"ScoreStreak’s unique format enables us to combine leagues, in this case the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, into a single contest," Borden said.

"This is a cool way to cross-pollinate sports while conforming with U.S. laws for legal fantasy sports," he continued. "In this case, we are hosting a freeroll. You can enter for free to win real money.

"We call it the 'Big Game Mash-up Freeroll.' This is a special game, that combines goals from Sunday's NFL and NBA games, that we created as a special thanks to all of our loyal players for making this such a great year for ScoreStreak and fantasy sports in general."

For more information about how the "Big Game Mash-up Freeroll" works, visit the company's website at www.scorestreak.com .

You can also get their iPhone app.

Under the Federal law that regulates sports fantasy play and makes it legal--the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or UIGEA, passed in 2006--sports fantasy is only allowed when the play is based on multiple games.

Sports fantasy play may not be based on the results of a single contest, such as the Super Bowl, because fantasy is supposed to be an excercise in skill, not luck.

Over multiple games, the thinking goes, skill will be more of a factor in achieving success and luck will matter less.

At least one other sports fantasy league, MaximumFantasySports.com, has also come up with a way around UIGEA's restrictive conditions determining what is and what isn't legal fantasy play.

Maximum is running Super Bowl pools, similar to the office Super Bowl pools which are ubiquitous at this time of the year.

Most fantasy sites, however, are taking a pass on the Super Bowl.
