Bookies Make Out Big With Early Week 1 NFL Games
The bookies were all smiles early Sunday during Week 1 as two of the most wagered on teams failed to cover.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the most heavily bet on team, getting nearly 95 percent of the action against the New York Jets. But it was the Jets that engineered a shocking final seconds comeback to win the game outright.
Trailing 17-15, Jets new starting quarterback Gino Smith scrambled for 10 yards and was shoved while he was out of bounds by Levonte David. The 15-yard penalty put the ball at the Buccaneers 30, and Nick Folk successfully kicked the field goal.
Even without the penalty, New York still would have covered the 3 point spread as they were only down by two points.
Elsewhere, New England nearly got stunned by Buffalo on the road. The Patriots were a -10.5 road favorite but failed to cover with a 2-point win.
Indianapolis was another public favorite that failed to cover at home against Oakland while Chicago’s win over Cincinnati was considered a “push” at most books.
The Titans, Chiefs and Seahawks were all public favorites that covered their respective spreads though none of these teams had the type of action we witnessed with Tampa Bay and New England coming into Week 1 of the 2013 regular NFL season.
