For the Eagles to have any hope of making the playoffs, they must defeat the Giants on their home turf for the fifth consecutive season.
The Giants used big play after big play to win in Philadelphia back in Week 3, getting a 40-yard TD catch from Brandon Jacobs (on a broken coverage) and 74- and 28-yard TD catches from Victor Cruz (on a series of missed tackles and a jump ball over Nnamdi Asomugha). New York QB Eli Manning is in the midst of a Pro Bowl season (299 pass YPG, 17 TD, 8 INT). He nearly led a fourth-quarter comeback in San Francisco against an elite 49ers defense last week. After making some progress, the Eagles defense reverted back to their dysfunctional ways last week, blowing another lead. They chose to play a lot of zone and Arizona back-up QB John Skelton picked them apart. Their offense is also a question mark, as Michael Vick suffered two broken ribs during the loss to the Cardinals and WR Jeremy Maclin is bothered by a shoulder injury. However, the Eagles have dominated this series, winning six in a row (SU and ATS) before the Week 3 loss, and their LeSean McCoy-led running game is far superior to New York’s minus Ahmad Bradshaw.
Eagles WR DeSean Jackson was suspended for the Cardinals game for missing a team meeting, but he’s expected to start on Sunday Night. Jackson has had two straight memorable games in the Meadowlands. In 2009, he had 178 receiving yards (including a 60-yard TD catch) and also scored on a 72-yard punt return. Last year, he won the game with a 65-yard punt return TD on the last play of regulation, capping an unbelievable 31-10, fourth-quarter comeback. If Vick cannot play, the Eagles will likely choose Vince Young instead of Mike Kafka, especially since Kafka tossed two interceptions in just seven pass attempts in relief duty of Vick against the Giants. One thing Philly fans can count on is that RB LeSean McCoy will be productive. He leads the NFC in rushing (906 yards) and has 12 total TD this year. McCoy also has 413 rushing yards on 6.0 YPC and 3 TD in five career meetings with New York.
Manning lit up the Eagles in Week 3, completing 16-of-23 passes for 254 yards, 4 TD and 0 INT. In his past four meetings with Philly, Manning has thrown for 270 passing YPG, 13 TD and 4 INT. He could have more success against an Eagles secondary that will be without CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle). Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw has missed the past two games due to a foot injury, and it is uncertain when he’ll return to the field. Backup RB Brandon Jacobs has had his moments, but his 3.2 YPC average hasn’t helped New York sustain a consistent rushing attack without Bradshaw.
