How NFL Stadiums Affect Your Book
All NFL stadiums aren’t the same.
Some stadiums are conducive to passing teams (think the New Orleans Saints playing in the Superdome). Some are conducive to rushing or defensive teams.
For online bookies, it is important to understand how home field advantage and the surface at stadiums can affect betting dollars so you can manage your book profitably.
Home Field Advantage
Home field advantage isn’t as big of an advantage against the spread as so many NFL bettors believe it to be.
- NFL home teams were only 120-137-10 against the spread last season. That’s 46.69%.
- Home favorites were even worse than straight up home teams. Home favorites went 75-94-7 against the spread last season. That’s 44.38%.
- Home dogs are slightly better ATS. Home dogs went 45-42-3 last season for 48.28%.
Even when it came to the money line, home teams were only at a 54.31% advantage. Home teams went 145-122 at home last season.
The numbers change drastically when home favorites are added into the mix. Home favorites went 111-65 on the money line.
NFL Betting Tip for Online Bookies: Encourage players to bet on favorites. The bottom line is that favorites just don’t cover the spread at home as often as so many of your players believe that they do. Point out specific, rivalry type, NFL games. For example, if the Patriots take on the Bills at home that week, point it out to your players. Home favorites are always over bet. Take advantage!
Surface Advantages – Total Betting
Just looking at straight, hard numbers and home field data when it comes to total betting isn’t enough. Surface, more often than not, has a huge determination on how many points are scored in any particular NFL game.
- Artificial surfaces are faster than real grass surfaces.
- The likelihood of having a higher-scoring game, unless the game is a total mismatch, goes up if the game is played on an artificial surface.
- For example, the over was 2-5-1 in the Denver Broncos home games last season. The Broncos played on grass at Mile High. The over went 4-4 in Bronco away games.
A good rule of thumb is that teams that play over grass at home are more likely to play in low-scoring games. Teams that play over artificial surfaces are more prone to playing in high-scoring games. It’s not an automatic rule. But it is one that pops up more often than not.
NFL Betting Tip for Online Bookies: Your players will almost never take into account stadium surface. Players like to take into account team stats when they make total wagers.
This is an advantage to you as an online bookie because teams play slower, and often times score less points, on grass than they do on artificial surfaces.
