Stan Simmons of BetOnline.com offered this analysis of the Vikings coming into the Week 14 game:
The Vikings had six turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns, and didn’t force any, so they should be content with a 34-28 loss in Detroit, a game that they still could have won if not for a missed facemask call. Christian Ponder was 11-of-21 for 115 yards and two touchdowns, but he was picked off three times, he lost one of his two fumbles and ended up getting the hook. Joe Webb took over and went 12-of-23 for 84 yards and a score, and he also ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, but a first-quarter 21-0 deficit was too much to overcome. The defense held their own, limiting the high-powered Lions to 280 yards, but the offense made far too many mistakes. Without the turnovers, Minnesota may have run away with the game as they racked up 425 yards, including 269 on the ground without Adrian Peterson (of course, the Lions were without the suspended Ndamokung Suh) and they had 29 first downs to 13 for the Lions.
Ponder (hip) had been limping around, but it was his performance that earned him a spot on the bench; however, head coach Leslie Frazier said that Ponder will be under center this weekend. Peterson (ankle) is expected to be back this weekend, but with the Vikings well out of the playoff race, they can afford to be safe with their franchise player. The Saints can be attacked through the air and if Ponder can void turnovers, the Vikings can put up points. New Orleans is only -2 in turnover margin and have only 12 takeaways on the season, but Ponder is a rookie and is prone to mistakes.
Be forewarned: The Saints are 3-11 Against The Spread vs. a team with a losing record. The Vikings, however, are just 3-10-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and a very disturbing 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games after allowing less than 90 yards rushing in their previous game.
