What The Duck??? Oregon Playing in Duck Uniforms Probably Won’t Affect Spread
- Do uniforms impact play in College Football and the NFL?
- Oregon bookies not sitting ducks this season as school goes 0-3 Against Spread thus far
- Ducks getup will pay homage to (and closely resemble) the school's beloved mascot, Puddles
Bettor’s Edge: Bettors wanting an advantage in Week 4 College Football may want to take a quack at Colorado as a +10.5 underdog.
That’s because the host opponent, Oregon, plan to take to the field for the very first time dressed as….drum roll please…..real live ducks.
From Fox Sports:
The program will roll out the look this weekend against Colorado. It features a sparkly silver helmet that represents the duck head, with the accompanying orange facemask representing the bill. The green and yellow jersey covers the body, while the white pants and orange socks and cleats (below) give you the duck legs.
The getup will pay homage to (and closely resemble) the school's beloved mascot, Puddles.
While the uniform option likely won’t have any impact on the odds, it’s notable the line on this game has come down a full point.
The Ducks, with a massive fan base that migrates from Oregon south into a good chunk of Northern California, have helped boost profits for area bookies with their record Against The Spread thus far 0-2-1 and 0-3 in some cases.
Does Uniform Choice Affect Play?
While in this case, Oregon players may feel a little awkward, there is nothing to suggest they will have any disadvantage against a Buffaloes team that has covered in all three of their games thus far this season.
Still, elements of a uniform can have an impact on play in some cases.
2014 season the NFL banned the use of nonstandard or “overbuilt” face masks as these were believed to add weight that negatively affects the helmet’s structural integrity and fatigues the neck extensors.
New untested uniform choices could, in theory, interfere with communications.
According to NFL rules, the quarterback and one defensive player on each team can have a radio to the coaches on the sidelines to make communicating and calling plays easier.
Then there is the overall goofiness factor.
“A player’s appearance on the field conveys a message regarding the image of the league and directly affects the league’s reputation and success,” the NFL’s Game Operations Manual states.
Here are this week's odds....
