Media Companies Start Pulling the Plug on Sports Betting Ads

(June 15, 2023) - The Guardian has vowed to stop accepting ads for gambling companies, and this could become a trend.

The decision, announced on Thursday, means adverts about sports betting, online casinos and scratch cards will no longer appear online or in print.  Lotteries can still advertise at least.

Okay it's not a death knell.  But this might only be the beginning.

Anna Bateson, chief executive of Guardian Media Group, said the move came as "our primary obligation is to do the right thing for our readers".

She added that the media company "decided that there are other ways to generate revenue".

And she argued that studies have shown a "clear correlation between exposure to gambling advertising and increased intentions to engage in regular gambling".

Vermont Legalizes Online Sports Betting

(June 15, 2023) - MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Republican Gov. Phil Scott signed a bill into law Wednesday legalizing online sports betting in Vermont.

Sports betting is legal in nearly three dozen states.

“I first proposed Vermont legalize sports betting several years ago and I’m happy the Legislature has come to an agreement, as well,” Scott said in a statement. “We know many Vermonters already participate in the marketplace and bringing it above board provides important resources and consumer protections.”

Under the law, the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery will operate sports wagering through contracts with between two and six sports betting operators. Each year the department, in consultation with the Department of Mental Health, will provide a report to the Legislature on the impact of sports betting on problem gambling in Vermont.

The operators will also be required annually to provide the state with a responsible gaming plan that includes information about the posting of materials related to problem gambling; resources to be made available to bettors with concerns about problem gambling; house-imposed player limits; and self-exclusion programs.

North Carolina Governor Signs Sports, Horse Racing Betting Law

(June 15, 2023) -  CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Regulated betting on sports and horse racing is expected to begin across North Carolina in the first half of next year, enabled by legislation Gov. Roy Cooper signed Wednesday that greatly expands gambling opportunities in the ninth-largest state.

The Democratic governor held the bill-signing ceremony at Spectrum Center, home to the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. It could house one of several anticipated sportsbooks allowed at or near professional sports venues as part of the law that received final approval in the Republican-controlled General Assembly last week.

The new law says betting could begin as early as Jan. 8 or as late as mid-June 2024 for sports wagering. Supporters say the expansion will bring new revenue and jobs, as well as attract stronger in-state pro sports franchises.

“This is an historic moment for the state of North Carolina, and this will benefit our economy for generations to come,” Cooper said.
