U.S. Lawmakers Push Bill That Would Ban Betting on College Athletes and That's Not All

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.) are spearheading legislation that would prevent betting on college athletes and stop advertisements pushing live in-play wagering.

Such efforts are likely to face an uphill battle, especially during an election year and a legislative period ending in a matter of months.

The bill is designed to address concerns over gambling addiction and the exploitation, as well as abuse, of college athletes.

Here is what the legislation entails:

1. Ban on In-Game Betting Ads: The bill aims to eliminate advertisements promoting sports betting during live sporting events.

2. Prohibition of Bets on College Athletes: To protect college athletes from potential exploitation and undue pressure, the bill seeks to ban proposition bets on their performances.

3. Restrictions on Gambling Funding: The legislation also proposes to forbid the use of credit cards to fund online gambling accounts, aiming to prevent individuals from accumulating debt due to gambling.

4. Federal Standards for Sports Betting: The bill would require states that offer sports betting to comply with federal standards, ensuring a uniform approach to consumer protection across the country.

Sen. Blumenthal emphasized that the bill is a matter of public health, aiming to stop addiction and save lives.

“It is a matter of stopping addiction, saving lives, and making sure that young people particularly are protected against exploitation,” Blumenthal stated.

This Weekend's Big Upsets in College Football

Tennessee took down Florida State Saturday.  Florida State has now collected its second 0-3 start (2021) of the Mike Norvell era after a brilliant 2023 season that ended with the Seminoles deprived of a playoff spot having been undefeated.

By far the biggest upset of the week came at the hands of Toledo beating Mississippi.  And it wasn't just a win.  It was a rout!

Did we mention this game took place at Mississippi State?

Toledo came to Starkville and blitzed the homestanding SEC squad as the Rockets racked up 454 yards and five touchdowns enroute to a 41-17 beatdown.

The Rockets scored on four of their five possessions in the first half and their defense held the Bulldogs to just three points to race out to a 28-3 lead at the break. MSU (1-2) has been outscored 55-6 in the first half the last two weeks against Arizona State and Toledo.

“We’re disappointed that we played and coached the way that we did in front of our home crowd with our students showing up the way that they did,” Bulldogs coach Jeff Lebby said. “Regardless, we’re going to kick off at 11 a.m. next Saturday morning here at home.”
