The NFL today decided to award the 2014 edition of the Super Bowl to the New York area, making it the first cold-weather city to host the February title game outdoors. Other cold-weather states were left scratching their heads, as they were previously told it wasn't an option.

Fans will of course have to pack a jacket, or other tundra-appropriate wear for this event. As the stadium is open-air, it will also make for an interesting half-time show.

Scoring since 2000 in games played in snow or freezing temperatures is about the same as in typically optimal Super Bowl conditions. Winds gusting 20 mph or more, though, depress point totals about 20%.
According to Stats Inc., the average total points in these games since 2000 is 36.5, while the average Super Bowl point total is 45.5.

Sportsbook.com had offered New York as the Superbowl 2014 Hosting Favorite at -500. Miami and Tampa Bay were also contenders
