Casino Gambling in Texas Possible as Bill Will Come Up in 2013 Session
Texas lawmakers began filing bills Monday before the 2013 legislative session... one of which includes a vote to have casinos in the Lone Star State.
Lawmakers will convene Jan. 8 for a 140-day session that would only go longer if the governor called a special session. Sessions that take place in even-numbered years go longer.
Voters could decide whether to allow casino gambling in Texas, if a joint resolution introduced by Democratic Sen. Rodney Ellis passes next year. The Houston lawmakers wants state revenue from gambling to help pay for public schools.
Lawmakers filed almost 200 bills and resolutions on Monday, and they may add more until the final months of the session. The bills are referred to committees, which hear testimony and debate their merits before deciding whether to pass them on to the entire legislature for consideration.
