One of Denver’s biggest bookies, Kerwin Sande, has been sentenced to 15 months behind bars.
Sande was charged back in August with running a multi-million dollar sports betting ring called Play Fast Sports. It catered to some of the Denver area’s most well known individuals and establishments.
The client list had been under seal but some area sports bar owners and local business executives were believed to have patronized Sande’s business. Prosecutors say that list will not be revealed.
In a single weekend Sande's business reportedly brought in $4 million to $7 million in wagers.
One source told the FBI they had lost $2 million to $5 million in bets in three years and owed nearly $1 million to Sande in gambling debts.
Sande plead guilty to money laundering and running an illegal gambling business during the period June 2006 through November 2013. He also agreed to forfeit $2 million in seized assets.
Prosecutors claim bets were placed either online or via the phone. Bettors would sometimes pay with goods such as gold coins and, in one instance, a motorcycle.
Colorado is one of the few states that does not make placing a wager either a misdemeanor or felony.
