The Israeli online gambling sector, long prominent and pioneering, took a major hit this week when it was revealed that hackers from that nation had ties to Web gambling.

An indictment was filed in New York against Israeli citizens Gery Shalon, 31, and Ziv Orenstein, 40.  Charges include money laundering, identity theft and fraud.

Both men are accused in the brazen 2014 database hacking of U.S. based bank JP Morgan.

The hackers managed to penetrate the corporate network of JPMorgan and mine gigabytes worth of information, including customer account data, undetected until August.

On Wednesday, a Jerusalem court ordered the two Israelis, Gery Shalon, 31, and Ziv Orenstein, 40, to be held in custody after U.S. authorities requested their arrest for extradition.  Both men were arrested in their homes on Tuesday.

U.S. authorities are also conducting an investigation into the illegal online gambling platform.  Charges are yet to be filed in relation to the Internet gambling matter.

Both men are facing several years behind bars.
