U.S. District Court Judge Michael Shipp was to hear oral arguments regarding New Jersey’s bid to allow sports betting at its racetracks and Atlantic City casinos.  A 22-year-old law bans sports betting in all but four states including Nevada.

The four professional sports leagues and NCAA filed a suit against the state to prevent this type of gambling.

Attorneys for New Jersey’s biggest racetrack, Monmouth Park, were not optimistic ahead of Shipp’s ruling.

“If the judge shocked everyone and said Monmouth Park could move forward as soon as it wants, we would try to do that as soon as possible,” said track operator Dennis Drazin on Monday. “But to do it for [this] Sunday — that’s just not practical. It’s not a realistic way to look at this.”

Monmouth Park Racetrack planned to begin offering sports betting at its tracks the start of this NFL season after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed the gambling measure into law.

A ruling could happen as early as Thursday (November 19) and probably no later than Friday.
