Mafia bosses this week sounded the alarms that money in their respective criminal enterprises is starting to run out and younger members may have to (gulp) “get real jobs in order to survive”.

This comes after jailed Cosa Nostra boss Giovanni Di Giacomo was secretly recorded complaining that protection and extortion rackets weren’t as lucrative as they once were.

Businesses that were only able to pay the Mob between €5,000 and €7,000 could no longer continue operating.

He added that the situation was so dire that younger Mafia members might be better off giving up on crime and getting a “real job”.

The Mafia has even had to resort to cost-cutting methods.

“Guaranteeing support for the families of those behind bars and their earnings had become an obsession for the bosses. It’s the only way to assert their leadership and maintain the cohesion of the organisation,” Captain Piero Iannotti, of the Palermo Carabinieri, told La Repubblica.
