Perth Australia Barrister Mistress Tells of ‘Gambling Problem’ at Murder Trial

A once prominent Perth barrister, Lloyd Rayney, is on trial for the murder of his wife.  In recent days, his daughters testified that their father was “not fit enough” to drag their mother’s body across the front yard into her car.

Prosecutors allege that Rayney murdered his estranged wife when she returned home from a dance class on August 7, 2007, then buried her body in a bush grave at Kings Park on the western edge of the Perth CBD.

On Monday, Rayney’s mistress testified that the barrister would lose hundreds of dollars in a single lunch break gambling.

"During our affair, I noticed that Lloyd's gambling became problematic," the unidentified woman said. "I was an interested gambler but not compulsive, however Lloyd would, at times, lose hundreds in a lunch hour.

The woman said her affair with Mr Rayney began after she bumped into him in a TAB sometime in late 1999.

"It turned out we were betting on the same horse, which eventually won," she said.

She said the affair began as a "gambling friendship" which turned into a sexual relationship after a Christmas party at the end of 1999.
