BOSTON (Associated Press) -- James "Whitey" Bulger's defense team has released photographs showing his softer side, including images of the reputed Boston gangster cuddling with animals.

The photos were filed late Wednesday.

Prosecutor Fred Wyshak complained to the judge Thursday, saying Bulger was trying to salvage his public reputation by showing himself "holding all sorts of animals," including dogs, parrots and a goat.

One photo shows Bulger sitting with a priest. A Boston lawyer says the priest is Monsignor Frederick Ryan, the former vice chancellor of the Boston archdiocese who was defrocked for allegedly sexually abusing teenage boys in the 1980s.

Bulger's lawyers still have not said whether Bulger will testify.

The 83-year-old is charged with playing a role in 19 killings.
