Stop Internet Gambling: Site Claims a Click of the Mouse, You Lose Your House (V

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson has just launched a website that opposes legalization of online gambling in the US.  StopInternetGambling.com, a crude site that contends online gambling will ruin society, went live Thursday.

From the StopInternetGambling.com website:

"Click your mouse and lose your house" isn't a marketing slogan for internet gambling advocates. But it should be. Over the past year, the States of Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware have passed laws legalizing internet gambling, and other states, like Pennsylvania and California, as well as Congress are now considering proposals to allow internet poker, blackjack, slots and other games. In the history of bad ideas, this has to be one of the worst! And public polling suggests that voters all across America are overwhelmingly against it.

The states that have passed internet gambling have done so with the idea of bringing in additional government revenue. But we have to ask, is it worth the societal and economic risk to produce more revenue for the government. Internet gambling advocates fail to mention the fact that internet gambling by definition will do away with tens of thousands of casino-based jobs and will take us down a slippery path from which we will never be able to turn back.

Simply put, the expansion of gambling to the internet is a societal train wreck waiting to happen. We have already seen the dangers with off-shore internet gambling sites, which is why the federal government has now outlawed them from engaging with United States citizens.

Internet gambling literally makes it possible for bets to be placed by anyone at any time. When gambling is literally available in every bedroom, every dorm room and every office space, there is no way to fully determine who is actually making the bet at-hand, and whether that bet is being made in a rational and consensual manner. At least with brick and mortar casinos, someone's identification can be verified and their behavior monitored to ensure that nothing unscrupulous is going on. Internet gambling simply does not afford us any of those protections.

Internet gambling subjects the young, elderly and working poor to the dangers of gambling without any checks and balances to keep someone from getting in over their heads or to protect them from online theft and fraud. At a casino, it hard to gamble in the name of another, but on the internet it is a whole lot easier.

Internet gambling is not a good bet for the future of America. It takes gambling too far. WE URGE STATE LAWMAKERS TO OPPOSE INTERNET GAMBLING AND WE URGE CONGRESS TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL NATIONWIDE.

The site is paid for by Adelson’s Las Vegas Sands Corp.
