While it's not the most scintillating Stanley Cup matchup, the majority of America is rooting for the Las Vegas Golden Knights instead of the Carolina Hurricanes heading into tonight's Game 1.
An X (Twitter) study conducted by the marketing team at BetOnline.ag found that 30 of the 50 states will be cheering for Vegas to take home its second cup in four years.
Carolina, which only has one championship (2006), was only backed by 20 states. Perhaps people are just drawn to the allure of a Vegas pro hockey team.
The state-by-state results were compiled by using geo-tagged X data, tracking tweets, hashtags and direct keyword phrases about who fans are rooting for (i.e. #GoKnightsGo and #CauseChaos). Nearly 700,000 tweets were included in the study.
Here's the state-by-state breakdown:
Las Vegas Golden Knights (30 states) - Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington
Carolina Hurricanes (20 states) - Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming
