The state of Tennessee regulates online sportsbooks but is unique in that there are no physical retail casinos or sportsbooks located here.

Knoxville residents and visitors can place bets at any number of regulated sites or offshore (internationally licensed) online sportsbooks.

Offshore sportsbooks like BetPhoenix (in business since 2006) offer top bonuses of 175% on what you open your account with (in addition to reloads) to those 18 and up and do not report your winnings or require a social security number.  They also feature a live dealer casino and race book all part of a single betting account.  Best of all, offshore sportsbooks do not cap winnings at 90% (take out 10%) as the Tennessee regulated sportsbooks are required to do.

Tennessee Regulated Sportsbooks and Taxes

Although all winnings and gaming revenue from sports bets are taxed at the federal level, there is no personal state tax on these winnings in Tennessee.

Sports betting law dictates that Tennessee sportsbooks typically withhold 25% of all winnings, provided you share your SSN. If you decline to do so, 28% of your winnings will most likely be held.

If you elect to bet offshore or with a local bookie, you'll want to keep accurate records when filing your taxes as you will not receive a file form W-2g from these businesses.

Your Tennessee Vols

Unlike some U.S. states, regulators do permit betting on the beloved home team Volunteers.

Tennessee was off to another solid year in 2024 and should be bowl eligible and even had a shot at the playoffs as of October 19.

Tennessee did promise a payout of $2000 for every $100 bet to win the 2024-2025 College Football Championship as of October 19.

They did drop a few spots on the AP Rankings following an overtime win against Florida ahead of their game versus Alabama on the 19th.

ESPN dropped Tennessee five spots to No. 14.
