Circa Sports App Kentucky

Circa Sports claims to be the "world's largest sportsbook".

Kentucky Sports Betting By the Numbers

The seven retail sportsbooks and eight sports betting apps combined to generate $624.9 million in handle. Nearly $2 billion worth of wagers were made the first nine months of regulated betting Kentucky.

Despite the Kentucky Wildcats being upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Oakland, the hold for March was only 8.6%. They regrouped with a vengeance in April, posting a 12.4% win rate, and followed that with a 12.9% hold for May.

The commonwealth collected $9.2 million in taxes.

Kentucky Current Sports Betting Market

The legal age to bet online and in person is 18, which is somewhat unique to a U.S.-regulated market that mostly allows those 21 and up to gamble.  Opening an online betting account can be done from one's own home via a licensed website's registration page. 

The sites regulated by the state are: Circa Sports, BetMGM, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, FanDuel, Caesars, DraftKings, Bet365 and Fanatics.

Kentucky Gambling Tax Rules

Kentucky's sports betting legislation states that all gambling winnings are subject to income tax withholding at a rate of 6%. Additionally, a federal tax of 25% is tacked onto winnings in excess of $5,000.

What You Can't Bet in Kentucky as of July 2024

Entertainment betting and politics. 

Kentucky is also pondering the idea of prohibiting college player prop bets, which would likely negatively impact regulated sports betting apps to a certin extent as Kentucky is one of the biggest college basketball states in the nation.  As of July 2024, this was yet to come to fruition.

“The request remains under review,” Travers Manley, interim general counsel for the regulator, said in an email to Covers. “There is not a specific date by which the KHRGC will issue a decision.”
