State Legislators Present Save Ohio Sports Act, Aims to Reign in Legalized Sports Betting

April 8, 2026 (9:20 pm EDT)

A bill to reign in sports betting in the state of Ohio bill was introduced by State Representatives Gary Click, Riordan McClain and Johnathan Newman and is divided into two initiatives.

First, it aims to create new consumer protections for those susceptible to gambling addictions, including limits on both wager amounts and bet frequencies; restrictions on where bets can be placed to prevent long sessions on betting apps; and outlaws on bets through debit cards or other forms of debt.

The second aspect of the legislation would be to ban player prop bets.

Rep. Newman made specific references to Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, both on paid leave while facing allegations of pitch-rigging for gamblers.

“Can you imagine the pitcher on the mound controlling the game to win bets? Who’s on the call? Who’s on the text? Who’s talking to him?” he asked during the press conference.

Alabama Governor’s Race: Tommy Tuberville Gets $30,000 Donation From Controversial Gambling Company

April 8, 2026 (3:34 pm EDT)

In today's Alabama gambling news, U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville received a series of big campaign donations last month but few were more controversial than the $150,000 from a Birmingham businessman and $30,000 from an online gambling company, VGW Luckyland Inc., a subsidiary of a huge Australian gambling company.

Alabama is one of only five states without a lottery. Gambling is illegal in the state and occurs only in facilities controlled by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Just because gambling is illegal in Alabama now does not mean that it will be illegal forever,” said Robert Jarvis, professor of law at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, and an expert on gambling and sports law, in an interview with AL.com.

“VGW is looking to the future and hoping to buy good will with a candidate who may in the future be in a position to help change Alabama’s gambling laws.”

Tuberville has said he thinks a state lottery and gambling package should be handled by the legislature, not the governor.

Tuberville’s office did not respond to a request for comment about the contribution.

Atlantic Journalist Gambling Experiment Goes Dreadfully Wrong as Community Calls Him Out

Wednesday April 8, 2026 (1:59 pm EDT)

According to details shared by DJ Akademiks, the Atlanta rapper Offset, once a member of the group Migos, allegedly lost close to $900,000 gambling at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida in the hours leading up to his altercation with Lil Tjay. Akademiks cited text messages reportedly exchanged between Offset and a casino host, which appear to confirm the extent of the losses.

Speaking on the situation, Akademiks suggested that Offset may have been caught in a cycle of trying to win back what he lost. “It seems like he’s in there chasing losses,” he said during a livestream, noting that extended time in that environment can leave anyone vulnerable, especially in a high profile setting.

Atlantic Journalist Gambling Experiment Goes Dreadfully Wrong as Community Calls Him Out

Wednesday April 8, 2026 (1:57 pm EDT)

McCay Coppins of The Atlantic ruffled a whole lot of feathers with his Atlantic piece entitled "My Year as a Degernate Gambler".

The journalist offers up a long first-person piece detailing how he spent an entire NFL season gambling $10,000 to understand the boom in legalized sports betting in the United States.

To complicate matters, Coppins is a practicing Mormon.  He's not really supposed to be gambling.  After consulting with his bishop, Coppins went through with the assignment.

And now he's appearing on talk shows, which isn't sitting well with the gambling community

Never one to hold back, Jeff Benson of Circa Sports had this to offer via this X feed:

"This is such a pathetic representation of the industry. @mckaycoppins doesn’t know the first thing about the space or how it works."

Trump Announces End of Military Operations Against Iran by? Betting Market

Wednesday April 8, 2026 (11:47 am EDT)

Traders at Polymarket believe that U.S. President Donald Trump will announce the end of military actions in Iran by April 21, giving this just a 60% chance of happening

A US, Israel and Iran agreement to a 2-week ceasefire announced Tuesday night remains unclear and some attacks continue.

The three sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire in an 11th-hour deal that headed off Trump’s threat to unleash a bombing campaign to destroy Iranian civilization. Hours later, Iran and Gulf Arab countries reported new attacks Wednesday.

It was not clear if the strikes would scuttle the deal, which U.S. Vice President JD Vance called “fragile.”

Police Believe Associate of Rapper Lil Tjay Behind Shooting of Former Migos Member Offset at Seminole Hard Rock Casino

Wednesday April 8, 2026 (10:40 am EDT)

A rapper known as Lil Tjay, Tione Jayden Merritt, was arrested for an altercation that occurred just prior to the shooting of former Migos member Offset at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida on Monday.

The Seminole Police Department in Florida said. He was charged with disorderly conduct and operating a vehicle without a valid license at a location nearby the famed casino.  Lil Tjay did not have a weapon and was not charged in the shooting, according to his attorney.

Police now believe an associate of Lil Tjay may be behind the shooting.

Offset is in stable condition at a nearby hospital.  He reportedly has since accused Lil Tjay of being involved in the shooting.

Offset rose to fame as part of Migos alongside Quavo and the late Takeoff, helping shape modern hip-hop with hits like “Versace,” “Bad and Boujee,” and “Walk It Talk It.” This incident comes years after Takeoff was fatally shot in 2022.

New Jersey Court Finds in Favor of Kalshi

Tuesday April 7, 2026 (8:24 pm EDT)

A three-judge panel of the Third Circuit upheld a preliminary injunction for the Kalshi exchange against enforcement by the state of New Jersey over sports-related event contracts. In a 2-1 ruling, the panel upheld an injunction for Kalshi granted by the New Jersey district court, ruling that New Jersey’s state gambling laws directly interfere with swaps transactions offered by Kalshi in violation of the CFTC’s exclusive jurisdiction (KalshiEx LLC v. Flaherty, No. 25-1922 (3d Cir. Apr. 6, 2026)).

The ruling means that New Jersey may not proceed with its enforcement action against Kalshi over trading of sports-related contracts.

The panel found that the event contracts are swaps traded on a CFTC-licensed designated contract market (DCM). The panel agreed with the district court that Kalshi demonstrated a likelihood of success on its argument that the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) preempts New Jersey law from reaching into CFTC-licensed DCMs.
