Matt Ryan wasn't even on the initial list of quarterbacks to be benched. On September 19, he made his debut with 28-1 odds, one of the longer shots on our board.  Then came this past Sunday.

Bettors who believed Ryan was done cashed yesterday at BetOnline as Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich announced that his team would start Sam Ehlinger the remainder of the season.

Most expect Ryan to retire at season's end. It was a good run Matty Ice.

“Right now, the move is for Sam to be the starter the rest of the season,” Colts’ head coach Frank Reich told reporters Monday, October 24. “It’s a big step, but we think he’s ready. This guy’s special. You all know it, everybody knows it. Just talk to anybody in that locker room.”

The Colts opened as high as a -6 point home favorite hosting the Washington Commanders in Week 8.  They had dropped to -3.

BetOnline reopened odds for the next quarterback to be benched, and vets Jared Goff and Marcus Mariota top the list.

Goff completed 21-of-26 passes for 228 scoreless yards and two interceptions in the Lions' 24-6, Week 7 loss to the Cowboys.

MLive's headline blared following that game.  "The clock is ticking on Jared Goff in Detroit", it read.

“Look, I’m frustrated,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “I’m frustrated because we’re losing. I’m frustrated for losing just like I was last year, just like I am any time (we lose), just like I was at New Orleans when we lost a game. You don’t like to lose games, you know? But I’m not down, and I’m not losing confidence. I’m not going to go hide in the corner. That’s not what I’m about. You change a couple of things, man, you take care of the football, you game plan the way you should, and all of the sudden you’re winning, you know?”

Mariota, meanwhile, managed to complete 8-of-13 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown in the Falcons' 35-17, Week 7 loss to the Bengals.  His team suffered its first loss Against The Spread.

Jacoby Brissett, PJ Walker, Taylor Heinicke, the Patriots QBs and the Saints QBs were excluded from the list due to various circumstances.

Speaking of the Pats, Bill Belichick declined to announce a starting quarterback for Week 8 following a couple of putrid performances from Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe last night. Jones is the favorite to be under center against the Jets this week, where New England is listed as a 1.5-point road favorite.
