New Mexico AG Sues Kalshi

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez announced Thursday he is suing the prediction market Kalshi. The suit claims that Kalshi is taking sports bets while evading state laws regulating online gambling. Torrez's lawsuit comes on the heels of one filed last month by Pojoaque, Sandia and Isleta pueblos and the Mescalero Apache Reservation, similarly arguing Kalshi is violating state gambling compacts and federal laws regulating Indian gaming by making it possible for people to bet on tribal lands.

Station Casinos Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Data Breach

Nevada resident Susan Geiner filed a lawsuit May 28 in U.S. District Court in Nevada against Red Rock Resorts, Inc., Station Holdco LLC and Station Casinos LLC. Geiner is a former employee and current customer of the casino operator over a data breach that occurred back in March. The lawsuit said the data breach occurred March 5. Station Casinos disclosed the breach May 21 in a filing with the Maine Attorney General’s Office.

The prediction market Kalshi has changed how it classifies itself to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, with the company’s latest batch of trademark requests avoiding language from earlier filings tying it to the gambling industry. Last year, it had informed the USPTO that its product involved “bookmaking services, namely, providing of information related to sports betting; organizing, arranging, conducting sports betting and gambling tournaments, competitions and contests.”

The family of Luke Ashton, who died by suicide in 2021 at the age of 40 after amassing gambling debts, has taken Betfair (owned by FanDuel parent company Flutter Entertainment) to the High Court with the case kicking off this week. They allege the company breached its duty of care through predatory product design, free bet incentives, and failure to intervene despite his severe gambling disorder.

Terry Rozier Fights Ruling to Forfeit Most of $26.6M Salary Due to Alleged Role in Gambling Scheme

The NBA has been granted the authority to withhold most of Terry Rozier’s $26.6 million salary due to his alleged role in an illegal betting plot, yet Rozier is fighting back. A motion filed Wednesday by Rozier’s attorney revealed the details of the previous arbitration ruling, as well as Rozier’s intention to change the conditions outlined for his release in his criminal case. Those conditions rendered him “in breach of his contractual obligation to play.” Different language could allow Rozier to fight that ruling in arbitration again and enter free agency this summer to secure a new contract, though it remains unclear whether any team would have interest in signing him. While it's not the most scintillating Stanley Cup matchup, the majority of America is rooting for the Las Vegas Golden Knights instead of the Carolina Hurricanes heading into tonight's Game 1. An X (Twitter) study conducted by the marketing team at BetOnline.ag found that 30 of the 50 states will be cheering for Vegas to take home its second cup in four years.
