Former NBA star Malik Beasley Pleads Not Guilty in Gambling Scandal

Former NBA player, Malik Beasley, has entered a not guilty plea to charges alleging he deliberately manipulated his on-court performance in 2024 to enrich sports bettors and settle his own financial obligations. His lawyer, Jason Goldman, formally entered the plea on his behalf and stated that his client "wants to move on with his life" following the arraignment. Beasley was charged on Monday and remained largely silent during his arraignment in Brooklyn federal court. He responded to the judge's inquiries with a simple "yes, your honor".

Backers of Online Sports Betting in Nebraska Submit Signatures to Get on 2026 Ballot

Per The Nebraska Examiminer, Lynne McNally, director of government relations for WarHorse casino, confirmed that the group Tax Relief Nebraska submitted signatures for a pair of petitions to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office on Friday, ahead of its Thursday July 2 deadline. The group submitted more than 201,000 signatures for a petition seeking a constitutional amendment to legalize online sports betting, and submitted roughly 146,000 signatures for an accompanying petition that would set up the statutory framework for taxes and direct 70% of the revenues to property tax credits — the same as casino taxes. They still need verification from all 93 Nebraska counties, but the number of signatures submitted well exceeds the minimum requirement. The constitutional amendment petition required roughly 126,000 signatures, while the other needed about 88,000. Assuming there is a ballot initiative, there is no guarantee online sports betting would be approved by Nebraska voters. In California, it was not. And in Colorado, one of the first states to offer such a referendum, the initiative just barely passed.

California Judge Strikes Down Cardroom Restrictions

Cardroom operators are breathing a sigh of relief as a California judge has ruled regulators lacked authority to impose sweeping statewide gambling restrictions. Among other things, Judge Richard Dawson found that the Bureau of Gambling Control exceeded its legal authority. The blocked rules targeted blackjack-style games and third-party proposition players, which threatened closures, jobs, and municipal tax revenue. Kyle Kirkland, president of the California Gaming Association, called the decision a win for communities across the state that depend on cardroom tax dollars. “The court’s ruling is a lifeline for communities across California,” Kirkland said in a statement. “If these regulations had been allowed to stand, the consequences would have been devastating for working families, local businesses, and the cities that rely on card room revenues to fund police, parks, libraries, youth programs, and other essential services.”
