We’re down to five head coach openings in the NFL…the Cardinals, Bills, Browns, Raiders and Steelers.
The oddsmakers at BetOnline.ag have updated lines for these five openings.
As of Saturday, multiple reports suggest that the Pittsburgh Steelers plan to hire former Packers and Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy as the team’s next head coach. He was listed at 9/2 odds of becoming the next Steelers head coach. All bets will be graded once the news is officially announced by the Steelers organization.
The 62-year-old McCarthy is 185–123–2 (playoffs included) across 18 seasons, 13 with Green Bay — which beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl following the 2010 season — and five with Dallas.
His potential hire is just the fourth by the Steelers since 1969 and a marked departure from his predecessors, Tomlin and Hall of Famers Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher.
All three were largely unknown assistants/coordinators. McCarthy is hardly that.

In regard to Mike McCarthy, Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette offered:
McCarthy’s track record of success over a long NFL career is the reason the Steelers are interested.
How viable is McCarthy as a candidate to be the Steelers’ next coach? The Steelers typically hire younger head coaches. All three of their Super Bowl-winning coaches were in their 30s when they were hired.
But when he met with reporters last week Rooney indicated he will be open to candidates with different backgrounds.
“I don’t want to put any real parameters around it,” Rooney said. “We’re going to be an open book in terms of who we look for and the list that we build. Can I sign up for another Chuck Noll, or another Bill Cowher, or another Mike Tomlin? Sure, somebody that we feel fits that mold would be great. But for now, we’re not going to kind of narrow the box too much.”
