Texas welcome sign

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will no longer be exploring casino gambling expansion in the Lone Star State. This includes sports betting as well.

It's not that you won't be able to place those Super Bowl bets on the Dallas Cowboys (ahem).

Offshore (internationally licensed) sportsbooks like BetPhoenix, local bookies and even prediction markets will happily take your bets.

Regulation won't be happening however.

The shifting away from considering gambling expansion follows years of high-dollar lobbying and campaign cash from casino interests that got nowhere

Much of those efforts were pushed along by Las Vegas Sands, whose majority owners, Miriam Adelson, just happens to also own the Dallas Mavericks.

In a new interview with CBS 11 News, Abbott said he is “not there yet” on casino legalization, citing concerns over addiction and recent sports-betting scandals involving athletes.

“There have been more red flags raised that cause us to have to pause,” said Abbott, adding that Texas shouldn’t approve anything that would harm the state’s culture or “sporting events that we have in the state.”

Abbott had previously suggested he was open to discussions on the matter.
