I grew up when boxing was on ABC every Saturday afternoon.
And big fights were an event! I remember fondly my dad taking me to watch the Sugar Ray Leonard/Marvin Hagler fight on close circuit TV.
The room was filled with cigar and cigarette smoke everywhere. And while I am happy that the world has wised up to the awfulness of smoking and secondhand smoke, I tremendously miss the pageantry of a big prizefight.
This weekend should be one of those events. Sadly, it will not. Boxing is now for the diehards like myself, but it is getting harder and harder to watch these fights and keep up with the sport.
Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev are two undefeated Russians fighting to become the first undisputed light heavyweight champion since Roy Jones Jr.
On a side note, my bachelor party in 2014 was in Vegas, where we saw Antonio Tarver knock out Roy Jones Jr. in the second fight of their trilogy. Roy Jones Jr. kept boxing well past my marriage ending in 2017! Both should have ended much sooner.
This should be an amazing fight. This fight should be glorified and promoted everywhere. Wishful thinking on my part.
