Is the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines Really THAT Crime Ridden?
The Chicago Sun Times published an absolutely scathing report this week in regard to the Rivers Casino in Des Plaines.
What it found?
Crime logs show thefts, fights, patrons passing counterfeit bills.
We suppose there was one caveat that could be considered as comforting.
"While most incidents weren’t violent, the state’s busiest gambling site, Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, saw several armed robberies in recent years. Harrah’s in Joliet also had 17 instances of domestic violence."
Rivers is Illinois' most profitable and busiest of the 17 casinos. It's located just outside of Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
These were the Chicago Sun's findings:
More than 1,500 crimes logged from 2020 to early this year out of roughly 3,800 reported at those casinos by the Illinois Gaming Board, according to records from the government agency.
Those cases are a tiny fraction of the 31.3 million trips through casino turnstiles during that time, including about 13 million visits to Rivers.
The most frequent violation at the Des Plaines casino: gambling or trying to gamble after a visitor was banned from doing so through what’s called the “self-exclusion” program in which would-be patrons sign up to be barred from gaming sites because they’re “problem gamblers.”
Showing up once banned amounts to a crime along the lines of trespassing, though not everybody caught is necessarily cited.
We're not saying stay home and play with your bookie's live dealer casino. For the vast numbers of people visiting Rivers Casino, the experience will be a safe one.
Advancing Security Worldwide has put out these important safety tips when visiting any casino, not just Rivers.
- Don't allow yourself to become distracted
- Avoid making yourself a target of thieves
- Report unusual activity such as being followed
- Consider alternative means of receiving large winnings
- Remain vigilant at all times
- Bring a friend or family member to avoid gambling alone
- Closely monitor your alcohol intake
- Be wary of strangers
- Remain aware of your surroundings
- Attend to your personal needs by taking regular breaks when gambling
- If confronted, think safety first
There have been documented instances of winning gamblers being followed home across the country.
Upon winning, make sure to monitor if you are being followed. Also, we suggest avoiding heading to the parking garage alone. Act as if you are on the phone with someone when approaching your vehicle. Consider carrying a can of Mace.
Ask for a casino check rather than cash for large jackpot pay-outs. When leaving the casino with a large amount of cash, ask for a security escort to your vehicle.
