Interests in Ohio, in particular that state's governor, have been vocal in recent weeks regarding so-called player performance prop bets. Scroll down for the latest headline stories from the world of gambling as well as the trending stories here at Gambling911.com.

Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine called on state regulators to ban all prop bets — not just on college games, but on professional sports as well.

DeWine’s proposal followed the suspensions of Cleveland Guardians’ pitchers Luis Ortiz and Emmanuel Clase, who are being investigated by MLB.

Concerns over match fixing by athletes and officials are based on real life events across the globe.

In the US, long before SCOTUS overturned sports betting prohibition in May of 2018 and the leagues immediately started embracing the activity, a former NBA ref served time in prison after admitting to conspiring to fix games.

Tim Donaghy admitted to betting on games he officiated and conspiring to fix them, leading to his imprisonment in 2007.

An ESPN investigation revealed that Donaghy's scheme involved making calls to influence point spreads and relaying inside information. The scandal damaged the NBA's reputation and remains a notable event in sports history, detailed in documentaries like Netflix's Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul.

Another issue that has forced the hands of state regulators: Player harassment.

In a March awareness campaign, NCAA President Charlie Baker said the abuse threatens the well-being of student-athletes and the overall environment of college sports.

“We need fans to do better,” he said in a statement at the time. “We need states to do better and ban player props that target student-athletes and enable detrimental abuse.”

New Jersey Assemblymember Dan Hutchison's focus is on the addictive nature of live in-game performance prop bets. He's looking to impose limits.

From Stateline

The rise of live, in-game bets — in which a gambler could place more than 200 individual bets during a baseball game if they wager on each pitch thrown — has only amplified his misgivings.

“And I’m like, are you kidding me? I mean, they’re betting on the next pitch, the next play, and it’s constant,” he said. “There’s no pause. It’s just not healthy.”

Worried that those bets can worsen problem gambling and threaten the integrity of sports, Hutchison, a Democrat, introduced legislation to ban New Jersey gambling licensees from offering live bets on individual plays during sporting events.

That bill illustrates growing state interest in regulating proposition bets, commonly called prop bets, a form of sports betting that is popular with fans but worrisome for sports leagues and state officials nationwide.

Its revenue, however, reached just $16.1 million, giving the operator a modest hold of 2.85%. Individuals are often promised legitimate jobs but coerced into scam work through violence, debt bondage, or forced prostitution. Some victims are beaten for missing quotas or held captive in compounds until their families pay ransoms.  “Many of these centers were built as casinos by Chinese criminal actors but became hubs for virtual currency investment scams when that activity proved to be more profitable,” the Treasury said. • Greek Officials Accused of Laundering Money Through Gambling Companies - Greece’s Independent Authority Against Money Laundering has identified over 200 individuals who funneled undeclared money through gambling operators with several betting companies under investigation. At least ten licensed gambling firms are being implicated according to Greek Reporter.:

"The scheme reportedly relied on the use of betting accounts as intermediaries for cash deposits. Players would first create accounts with licensed gambling operators, receiving a unique code linked to their profile. Instead of depositing funds through standard banking channels, they allegedly visited small retail shops acting as agents—such as convenience stores, mini-markets, and gas stations—that were affiliated with betting firms. At these shops, customers handed over large sums of cash, which were then credited to their betting accounts. Once deposited, the funds appeared to have passed through a legitimate gambling platform. With a simple transfer, the balance—including the illicit funds—was moved to personal bank accounts under the guise of legitimate gaming proceeds."
