NBA Guard Terry Rozier Seeks to have Gambling Case Dismissed

Ex-Heat star Terry Rozier claims a text unearthed during discovery exonerates him of criminal charges in the federal sports betting case. Rozier is accused of intentionally undercutting his performance in at least one game, while playing for the Charlotte Hornets, to benefit a group of bettors. More specifically, the allegations in this matter point to Rozier telling a friend, his co-defendant Deniro Laster, he planned to exit early, blaming an injury, so he could sell that information to other bettors who could then win prop bets on his underperformance. According to prosecutors, Rozier solicited a $100,000 bribe in turn. In Friday’s filing, Rozier pointed to a text message that prosecutors turned over in discovery from March 29, 2023 — “as the alleged proceeds related to the March 23 game were being collected” — in which Laster writes to a third party, “Dont tell chum bout the bet.” One of Rozier’s nicknames is “Chum.” The recipient answered, “Hell no.” “This should end the case. One does not hide a bet from the person who supposedly sold it,” Rozier argued in the motion filed by his attorney David Markus of Markus/Moss PLLC. Prosecutors addressed the claim in a footnote in their reply: “The government’s investigation has developed evidence from multiple sources that this text chain does not relate to sports gambling.” (source: Court House News)

New York Sues Prediction Market Kalshi Alleging ‘Illegal Gambling Operation’

New York officials sued prediction market platform Kalshi on Friday, calling it an “illegal, unlicensed gambling operation” as the state seeks to halt its operations and force the company to forfeit its profits. New York joins a growing number of states filing lawsuits against Kalshi and other companies in a dispute with President Donald Trump’s administration over who regulates the fast-growing prediction market. Kalshi and other platforms argue they are federally licensed and regulated, and states have no authority to govern them. “It’s sad to see this type of political theater from the leadership in our own state,” Elisabeth Diana, a spokesperson for New York-based Kalshi, said in a statement. “States can’t just shut down a federally licensed exchange. This would also hurt New Yorkers, who would be driven offshore. We love New York, we love New Yorkers, and New Yorkers love our product.”

Marquee Liga MX Matches on Tap This Evening

1. Puebla vs. Chivas Guadalajara — VERY HIGH handle
This should easily be the biggest Liga MX betting match Friday. Chivas are one of Mexico's two biggest-supported clubs alongside América, and their games tend to draw action regardless of opponent. The match is at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla; Chivas' own schedule confirms the July 31 fixture. The betting market also gives the game a very obvious public side. ESPN currently shows roughly Puebla +375 / Chivas -150, making Guadalajara a substantial but still very playable favorite rather than something like -300 or -400.
2. Atlético San Luis vs. Tijuana — MODERATE handle
This is the other Friday Liga MX match. CBS lists it at 11 p.m. EDT, following Puebla-Chivas at 9 p.m. EDT. It's a legitimate betting event, but neither San Luis nor Xolos has anything close to Chivas' national following. The later kickoff also helps somewhat with standalone wagering because bettors coming out of Puebla-Chivas can roll into this game.
