Brazil Bans Online Gambling

Brazil has imposed an immediate suspension on online betting, with operators no longer allowed to accept deposits and all licensed betting websites and apps set to be blocked from October 6. Operators will be required to return all player balances by October 14, even if customers do not actively request a withdrawal. The Lula administration says the move was driven by concerns over addiction and household debt, arguing that previous regulatory measures have failed to prevent financial harm to Brazilian families. Industry groups have vowed to challenge the decision in court

Iowa Athletes Busted for Betting Take Illegal Search Claims to Eighth Circuit

The lower court found the investigators' warrantless sweep violated the athletes' Fourth Amendment rights, but dismissed the case anyway after finding the officers were entitled to qualified immunity. Twenty-seven current and former athletes at two Iowa universities and a community college sued state law enforcement officers investigating possible sports wagering violations using “geofencing” technology to track when sports betting apps were opened or used in or near athletic facilities.

Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Will Switch to Temporary Smoke-Free Casino Friday

A new temporary “smoke-free experience” is coming to Tampa’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino as renovations begin in the casino. The temporary gaming space, called the Hard Rock Event Center Casino, officially opens Friday, Sept. 25. It features 682 new slot machines and 34 table games including the uber popular Dragon Link slot, Blackjack, Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Three Card Poker, Mississippi Stud, and Roulette.

Polymarket Sued By New York AG

Governor Kathy Hochul and New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced a lawsuit against QCX LLC d/b/a Polymarket US (Polymarket) for running an illegal gambling operation in New York through its prediction market platform. Polymarket launched in the United States in December 2025 as a service that allowed users to bet money on the outcome of sporting events, promising users “sports — followed by markets on everything.” An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) found that Polymarket’s prediction market is an illegal, unlicensed gambling operation that exposes New Yorkers — including those under the legal gambling age of 21 — to serious personal and financial risk. The lawsuit is seeking a court order stopping Polymarket from operating as an unlicensed gambling business and requiring the company to pay fines, forfeit all illegal gains and pay restitution to users. “I will always stand up for New Yorkers when bad corporate actors prey on consumers and threaten tax dollars that fund schools and critical public services,” Governor Hochul said. “By running an unlicensed gambling operation, Polymarket has done more than just knowingly violate state law, they have put New Yorkers at risk, especially those underage who are most vulnerable to problem gaming. Nobody is above the law in our state, and working with Attorney General James, we are fighting to protect New Yorkers and put this illegal operation to an end.” Attorney General Letitia James said, “Our gambling laws exist to protect New Yorkers, prevent the potential harms of problem gambling, and ensure funding for educational and public benefit programs. By skirting New York’s laws, Polymarket is targeting the most vulnerable and depriving New York families of critical services and support. My office will never hesitate to take action to defend our laws and keep New Yorkers safe.”
