CFTC Proposes Classifying Event Contracts as Swaps, Excluding Gambling
Tuesday October 13, 2026 (9:13 am EDT)
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued two regulatory measures to clarify federal oversight of prediction markets. The first proposed rule would expand the definition of “swap” to cover event contracts linked to cultural events, weather, politics, and sports. The agency said the proposal aims to resolve ambiguity surrounding the classification of these contracts under federal law. “Americans use event contracts to hedge risks, speculate, and provide the public with information about the outcome of future events,” CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said. The second measure, an interim final rule that takes effect upon publication in the Federal Register, confirms the agency’s longstanding position that casino-style gambling, including sportsbook wagers and casino games, does not qualify as swaps. “Casino-style gambling products are not derivatives,” Selig said, describing the measure as clarifying “the limits of regulatory remit.”

The CoinPoker tournament is called The One. It kicked off October 4, the buy-in is $250, and the prize pool is guaranteed at $5 million no matter how many people show up. First place takes $1 million of it. To actually collect $5 million at $250 a head, CoinPoker needed 20,000 entries. As of Friday it had a little over 10,000, with a handful of starting flights left. The $5 million gets paid either way, and the difference comes out of the poker site's pocket. But by Monday morning, we were learning that the overlay had been wiped out with the money in exceeding the $5 million mark.

St. Louis Man Charged With First-Degree Robbery After Allegedly Following Woman Home From Casino
Tuesday October 13, 2026 (9:13 am EDT)
Court documents allege that Ronell L. Williams, 36, followed a woman home from the Casino Queen in East St. Louis after she won $3,203 on the slot machines. She left and started to drive home, crossing the Eads Bridge and turning onto Lumiere Place. Williams allegedly followed her in a maroon car, motioned for the woman to roll her window down. He then told her that the muffler on her car was hanging off. When the woman did not pull over, court documents allege that Williams continued to follow her and veered into her lane, forcing her off the road. She then pulled over to confront Williams. Court documents state that Williams then pulled out a gun and told the woman to give him her money.
