Premier League, FA, EFL and WSL Agree Code of Conduct Over Gambling Deals
Ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, two Canadian women’s soccer coaches have been removed from the organization after two separate incidents of a drone flying over New Zealand’s training sessions.
Canadian team soccer analyst Joseph Lombardi and assistant coach Jasmine Mander will no longer be part of the staff during Olympic competition, while head coach Bev Priestman voluntarily will not coach in the team’s first match against New Zealand on Thursday, the Canadian Olympic Committee announced Wednesday morning.
Campaigners have criticized football clubs over betting sponsors and, despite a voluntary framework to be implemented this season, a number of clubs continue to capitalize.
Crystal Palace faced criticism after entering into a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with gambling firm Net88 last month. That sponsorship deal runs until the summer of 2026, when gambling companies will be banned from the front of Premier League club shirts. The move follows Wolverhampton Wanderers also announcing a front-of-shirt partnership with Asian gambling company DEBET that same week.
This week, Bournemouth became the latest with front-of-shirt gambling logo.
Bournemouth’s move, announced on Tuesday, means more than half of England’s top-flight teams will have a betting company on the front of their shirt, up from eight last season. Chelsea are the only Premier League club yet to announce a front-of-shirt sponsor. They began last season without one after supporters lobbied against a deal with an online casino.
The Premier League, together with the Football Association, English Football League and Women’s Super League, have released a code of conduct for gambling deals as top flight soccer clubs get accused of milking cash from gambling firms in advance of the upcoming ban.
Not sure this qualifies as a ban per se, but the Guardian breaks down the code of compliance:
The code says competitions and clubs should only enter into agreements with a gambling company licensed by the Gambling Commission or part of a “white-label partnership”. It adds that areas of a stadium designated for the exclusive use of families should not display gambling sponsorship logos. The Big Step, a charity dedicated to removing gambling advertising in football, said clubs continue “to blindly sign these desperate deals for a few extra quid”.

Canada Sends Home Two Women’s Soccer Coaches as Spygate Scandal Rocks Olympics After Drone Discovered
Ahead of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, two Canadian women’s soccer coaches have been removed from the organization after two separate incidents of a drone flying over New Zealand’s training sessions. New Zealand reportedly filed a complaint following the incidents.
“On behalf of our entire team, I first and foremost want to apologize to the players and staff at New Zealand Football and to the players on Team Canada,” Priestman said in a statement. “This does not represent the values that our team stands for. I am ultimately responsible for conduct in our program. … In the spirit of accountability, I do this with the interests of both teams in mind and to ensure everyone feels that the sportsmanship of this game is upheld.”
