Tennessee Speaker Faces Allegations He Tried to Keep Troubled Action 247 Sportsbook Afloat (13100 Impressions)
Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton (R, 25th District) is alleged to have tried to help keep a payday lender’s struggling sports gambling company alive, and now he's come under intense scrutiny.
Reports suggest that Sexton took steps that allowed the owners of a payday lending company, Advance Financial, to keep using their stores to boost the now-defunct online sports betting enterprise.
Michael and Tina Hodges, owners of Action 247, had previously turned to the Tennessee Speaker of the House in 2014 to create a new triple-digit interest loan called a “Flex Loan.” The couple’s company, Advance Financial, through the Flex Loan, went on to make hundreds of millions of dollars lending to the state’s most financially vulnerable. That lender would go on to sue some 110,000 residents of the state.

@AGTimGriffin is one Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin, who offered his opinion on the matter back in October.
“The acts you describe meet the Supreme Court’s definition of gambling and gaming: a participant is risking money on a chance that some future event occurs,” wrote Griffin in a formal opinion prepared by Assistant AG William Olson and published on Oct. 23.
“The fact that a company has rebranded this gambling activity as a ‘prediction market’ does not protect it from scrutiny,.
“Further, it is unlawful for anyone to ‘receive or transmit information’ concerning sports or games ‘for the purpose of gaming.’ Thus, to the extent that a company like Kalshi facilitates wagers on sports outcomes or transmits data for gaming purposes (and your correspondence suggests that it does), those actions violate the law as well.
“Based on the information provided in the opinion request, a business model like you have described constitutes gambling or gaming and requires licensure.”
