Yasiel Puig Trial Coverage Continues
The trial of ex-Dodgers star Yasiel Puig is expected to wrap up this week, but defense attorneys remain unsure whether they’ll call him to testify and risk cross-examination.
His trial continues to captivate Gambling911.com readers, however, the last two days have mostly been uneventful. His trial made up two of our top five search queries.
Puig faces up to 20 years in prison over accusations he lied to federal investigators in January 2022 about his involvement in an illegal gambling ring involving illegal bookmaker Bo Nix. He agreed to a plea deal in August 2022 — which likely would have spared him jail time — only to back out of that agreement a few months later and fight the charges.\
Donny Kadokawa took the stand last week to testify that he placed bets on behalf of Puig. He also admitted to earning a 25% commission on Puig's net losses.
Despite questions about Kadokawa’s credibility, Courthouse News reporter Edvard Pettersson believes Puig still needs some ninth-inning magic to evade punishment. Fortunately for the 35-year-old Cuban, the judge prevented a video of Puig speaking English in 2019 from being played in front of the jury, which could have undermined his argument that a language barrier clouded his January 2022 interview with federal investigators.
