Gang Fears on Vegas Strip as More Than a Dozen Arrests Made Sunday Night
LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas police say authorities arrested several known gang members at a resort casino near the Strip that were gathered at the Rio Sunday night. That casino plays host to the World Series of Poker each year.
The large gathering of gang members was broken up around 2 a.m. that night.
Police Capt. John Pelletier tweeted more than a dozen arrests were made and five firearms were seized.
"This was just some proactive police work where the pieces fell into place,” Metropolitan Police Department gang unit Capt. John Leon said, noting the arrests followed a proactive brief investigation at the property.
Leon said several gangs were represented at the party, which had an estimated attendance of 40 to 50 people.
Gang parties are not common in the resort corridor because security typically does a good job of stopping them, Leon said.
In October, 19 people were indicted on charges including murder and racketeering after a monthslong crackdown on a North Las Vegas gang.
