How They Got Here

No. 5 seed Gonzaga comes into its matchup against No. 1 seed Purdue as a +4.5 dog.  KenPom gives us this very same number.

The Zags beat Kansas 89-68, advancing to the Sweet 16 for the 9th straight time.

Anton Watson scored 21 points and Ryan Nembhard had 15 assists and the Bulldogs improved to 16-2 since January 18 with both losses coming at the hands of Saint Mary's, which just exited the tournament.

“Late December, it was looking like maybe it wasn't going to happen," said Gonzaga coach Mark Few.  "But I'll give credit. These guys stayed coachable. We figured it out."

Purdue comes into this Sweet 16 game after demolishing Utah State, 106-67.

Zach Edey had 23 points and 14 rebounds.  Trey Kaufman-Renn added 18 points and eight boards for Purdue (31-7), which broke the school’s single-season record for victories. Fletcher Loyer had 15 points.  Purdue also managed to set a school record for most points scored in a tournament.

“Zach Edey, he’s special,” Utah State coach Danny Sprinkle said. “There haven’t been many players like that in college basketball history. That’s why I think they can just take it to another level. We told our guys, yeah, Zach Edey is obviously a national player of the year, but they’ve got other really good players and that can’t go unnoticed.”

Sixers? Knicks? Who Can Challenge Boston in the East this Season?

As the new NBA season gets underway, there is most certainly a sense that the Boston Celtics are the team to beat once again. The 18-time champions really took an “if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it” policy in the offseason, and it’s hard to argue with the tactic.
