2018 Preakness Stakes Mudders Take Center Stage as Rain Could be in Forecast
Just as with the recent Kentucky Derby, rain could be in the forecast for Saturday's Preakness Stakes race. Bettors will be seeking out mudders, those horses that can run in the slop. SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE
We already know that Justify and Good Magic are more than capable of running in the muck. Justify won this year's Kentucky Derby, the wettest on record while Good Magic finished in second place. Bravazo is another horse that has raced well in the mud.
Below you will find all of the 2018 Preakness Stakes odds.
Post time: Saturday, 6:20 p.m. Eastern time, NBC
*****
No. 1 Quip (12-1 morning-line odds)
Trainer: Rodolphe Brisset
Jockey: Florent Geroux
Quip won the Grade II Tampa Bay Derby and finished second in the Grade I Arkansas Derby. He elected not to enter the Kentucky Derby, even though he did qualify, in favor of the Preakness Stakes. Only four “new shooters” over the past 28 years have won the Preakness, but he will be fresh and dangerous as a horse that has all the ingredients for a victory.
No. 2 Lone Sailor (15-1)
Trainer: Tom Amoss
Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr.
Lone Sailor was second in the Grade II Louisiana Derby and eighth in the Kentucky Derby. He tends to sit way back on pace and this race probably will not suit that style.
No. 3 Sporting Chance (30-1)
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Luis Contreras
He did win two of three starts as a juvenile. He'll be fresh for the Preakness Stakes
No. 4 Diamond King (30-1)
Trainer: John Servis
Jockey: Javier Castellano
Diamond King won the Federico Tesio Stakes for his fourth win in six career starts. He has missed the board only once. At 30-1 odds and fresh for this race, there is definitely some value.
No. 5 Good Magic (3-1)
Trainer: Chad Brown
Jockey: Jose Ortiz
Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner had a solid showing in the Kentucky Derby, finishing second in the mud (rain could be in the forecast for this race as well) and is better suited for the 1 3/16-mile Preakness. Favorite Justify has had a heel problem that could come into play here, so Good Magic, in perfect health, might see his odds slashed if you don't lock in the price now.
No. 6 Tenfold (20-1)
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Jockey: Ricardo Santana Jr.
Tenfold ran fifth in the Arkansas Derby in just his third career start though Asmussen is a Hall of Famer who has two Preakness wins: Curlin (2007) and Rachel Alexandra (2009).
No. 7 Justify (1-2)
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Jockey: Mike Smith
The unbeaten colt broke the “Curse of Apollo” in the Kentucky Derby. He may be running in the slop again if forecasts hold up. Baffert is 4 for 4 in the Preakness with his Derby winners. Preakness favorites are 72 for 142 in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The only concern might be if Justify's heel begins to act up.
No. 8 Bravazo (20-1)
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey: Luis Saez
Bravazo’s best races have come when he has stalked the early pace. Another things to monitor is the forecast. Bravazo is capable of running in the mud, though he finished 10th on the muddy track of Churchill Downs just two weeks ago.
