Knight's Choice won a thrilling photo finish at the Lexus Melbourne Cup this week and it turns out quite a few high stakes horse bettors were backing him. 

The son of Newgate stallion Extreme Choice settled toward the rear before picking up steam towards the inside.  The 5-year-old surged alongside eventual runner-up Warp Speed before his shock win at 90-1 odds.

"I thought I'd be a pair closer, but they went quick, so I just rode him for luck because I know he's got a good turn of foot," said jockey Robbie Dolan.

Racebooks across the globe paid out big bucks on Knight's Choice, including Ladbrokes, which revealed some Ladbrokes revealed some $3 million placed on the horse.

One mystery wager in particular truly stood out.

One punter scored a $728,000 win after mystery first four bet was placed from a $24 wager.

There were others.

TAB also paid out $81,000 to one winner after placing a $1000 bet on the horse at $81.

A mystery trifecta bet also paid mone lucky gamblers $28,491.70 on a $6 bet.

It's interesting to note that Knight's Choice had just 1.5 per cent of the TAB hold throughout the market.

Knight's Choice was paying $81 for the win with Ladbrokes and TAB.

Second place went to Warp Speed, who was paying $8 on the fixed odds for a place with TAB.

Okita Soushi finished third at $6 while Zardozi finished fourth.

The quinella paid $806, the exacta was $2,324 while the trifecta was worth a whopping $30,604.70. The first four paid $870,448.60.
