After opening at 30-1 odds, Animal Kingdom’s 2011 Kentucky Derby odds have suddenly been slashed to 6-1 at Bookmaker.com

This is by far the biggest move in this year’s Derby thus far and is indicative of heavy action coming in on Animal Kingdom.

This isn’t the only horse whose odds have been slashed somewhat dramatically.

Archarcharch (+900) and Mucho Macho Man (+750) have also gained momentum in the final hours.

A good portion of bets are taken on the Derby in the four hours leading up to the start of the race, which results in significant fluctuation of odds.  Additional information related to the competitors is often televised during this time period as well, which helps allow bettors to make a final more educated decision.  Weather also leads to delays in wagering since certain horses run better in the mud.  Soldat’s odds have moved up to +900 because of the rain potential (since he runs well in the muck).

While there was intermittent rain during the early portion of this afternoon, it does not appear to have much of an effect on the track.  Radar at 5 pm ET shows no rain moving in on Churchill Downs before or during the race.

How We Follow Horse Racing Has Completely Changed

Horse racing has always been a sport built on routine. Certain days meant certain tracks, the form guide landed when it landed, and if you missed a race, you simply caught up later. Following the sport required a bit of commitment, a bit of patience, and often a bit of guesswork.
